Treatments

Manual therapy

Manual therapy is the use of skilled hands-on techniques, such as mobilisation and manipulation, for the treatment of health complaints.
It includes techniques such as massage, soft tissue mobilisation, trigger point release, neural mobilisation, and positional release.

This form of physiotherapy practice is used to diagnose and treat soft tissue and joint pathology by reducing pain, increasing range of motion, reducing inflammation, improving tissue repair, increasing flexibility, inducing relaxation and improving function.

At Surrey Hills Physiotherapy we have the necessary experience and relevant postgraduate training for the effective use of these techniques. Were appropriate we combine manual therapy with other approaches to treatment – such as acupuncture, electrotherapy and specific exercise prescription – in order to resolve or manage the problem.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be used in combination with other forms of physiotherapy to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and their accompanying symptoms e.g. pain, weakness, nausea and fatigue. Current research supports the use of acupuncture for the effective management of conditions including neck pain, low back pain and knee pain. Our scientific understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the effects of acupuncture is growing all the time.

ACL rehabilitation
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury accounts for almost half of all injuries to the knee. Rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in the successful management of this condition. The majority of ACL injuries will be best managed by surgical reconstruction but a proportion of individuals will be suitable for conservative management.

Dr Massimo Barcellona has recently completed a PhD in the rehabilitation of individuals following ACL injury. He has specific expertise in both the conservative and the post-operative management (from immediately following surgery to return to sport) of this client population.

Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy involves the use of machines to deliver energy to tissues in order to induce physiological effects, which in turn may lead to therapeutic benefits. Electrotherapeutic modalities include ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (also known as TENS) and interferential therapy. These interventions can be used to reduce pain, facilitate healing and modulate inflammation in order to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction.

At Surrey Hills Physiotherapy electrotherapy is offered as an adjunct to other treatment modalities such as manual therapy, specific exercise therapy and acupuncture.
